Chapter 7 (ADDIE) - Did It Do Any Good? Evaluation

The final phase of the ADDIE system is the Evaluation phase. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine if the training worked and was it affective. Most importantly as the client is concerned, did it meet the company goals and objectives?

I have been in several training sessions over the years and always know that there will be some sort of questionnaire or feedback process to evaluate. You wonder who really reads them or if they even matter to anyone. One aspect that I learned from the chapter relates to the who person(s) that I’m talking about. It was interesting to discover that there are probably only two who’s that care. Obviously the first reason would be because someone else wants to know whether the training that you designed was effective. The second being the designer him/herself out of curiosity.

Most importantly you would want to evaluate whatever it is that the client wants to know about. There is no reason to evaluate things that simply don’t matter to anyone. That’s why it is so important to prepare the questions that will be used to acquire the necessary information. It’s a similar process to the analysis phase. I would design my evaluation and focus on the 3 knows: know who you are evaluating for, know why you are evaluating, and know what they want to know.

Self-evaluations are another process that can be acquired through Opinionnaires and are commonly referred to as the “Smile Sheet”, keep in mind that its purpose is to evaluate whether or not you helped the organization meet their goals.

Evaluations should be implemented throughout the design in each phase to meet client expectations and to enhance project efficiencies. Two forms of evaluations are the Formative and the Summative Evaluation.

Formative Evaluation

A formative evaluation is based on continuing and incoming knowledge. An example of this would be learning six phases and evaluated each phase one phase at a time.

Summative Evaluation

A summative evaluation is based on the final or overall conclusion phase. An example would be a cumulative Final Exam that is based on the information from all of the previous modules.

Below is the sample summative evaluation form that I chose. I like that it asks the important questions regarding the overall learning experience the trainee obtained during the session and how it relates to their position and job tasks.
